MMMMM Thanks Bob but it's still so confusing?

Thanks for your post Bob, just goes to prove! I had no idea picture posts had to be searched for and were not displayed for all automatically?????

The site still confuses me, I am so sorry to say!

I am a webmaster of one site and contribute to many and this site still manages to make me spin around in circles?

So, from now on, I have to post on the forum, not just post pictures? So if I have new photos I want to share then its best to put them on a forum post or in a thread....

I have recently posted many pictures, ON and OFF Old Moor, but of what I thought would be of interest. So from now on I will post as Bob says.

If you have missed any, as I thought it was personal and people were just not commenting as my content wasn't good enough???? Look here for a few examples

  • Thank goodness Alan,

So I am not going mad then?

I actually felt like I was being excluded???

    C ;-)

  • I have to say I found the posts above a bit confusing and wondered what the problem actually is!

When I take photos at OM, I post them on OM Gallery, Frampton on Frampton Marsh gallery and Blacktoft on Blacktoft gallery etc....no great chore.

I'd not realised that there was a 'global' community page until I read the above...

OM/Dearne Valley is my local reserve being only 1.5 miles from home so that is where I visit most. I can see that for people who visit many sites up and down the UK, it would be useful to have a pointer about what is where.

However, my experience is that the gallery photos at OM are very much in context, very seasonal and give a very good idea of what is out and about, not just birds but other wildlife and plants.

It is a very welcoming place for newcomers, beginners and old friends (and the cafe is quite a social hub!) and it is well worth a visit.

  • Bob,

Fair comments - it all depends on what you are trying to achieve I suppose.

It is odd that the original gallery posting of a photo does not appear on the global community forum but, if a comment is subsequently made about it, then it does.

As you say - the issue appears to be a structural one; ie you would think that the global community site could 'read' all the local community posts (hyperlinks?) or, alternatively, the local post could be made to a sub-section of the global community? The trick will be to avoid long upload/download times whatever way they decide to go.

  • If you want to post a photo you've taken at Old Moor, you can post it in the gallery: http://www.rspb.org.uk/community/placestovisit/dearnevalley/m/dearnevalley-mediagallery/default.aspx

There are no restrictions on who can see those photos, but anyone wanting to comment on them needs to have a Community account and be logged in.

The forum is more geared towards asking questions or posting text, but you can also add photos if you want. That's fine.

If you're purely after comments on your photos, maybe a bespoke photo-sharing website is more your scene.

In the future, it's likely that we'll make more use of content from the Community. For example, we might display gallery photos tagged with 'avocet' or 'water vole' etc on a page on the main website about those species.

We already use photos from the Dearne Valley gallery on the Old Moor (and other relevant reserves) pages, eg: http://www.rspb.org.uk/oldmoor

As for keeping up to date with activity on the Dearne Moor group, you can do that in a variety of ways. Use the RSS feed or subscribe to email updates (there are options for that on the right-hand side of the blog and forum pages). Or just bookmark it and check it when you're online.

    Thanks

  • As you are probably aware, the best place to report any bugs or problems with the community is in the Tips and tricks forum.

These issues aren't specific to the Dearne Valley group, and it's easier to keep track of things if you post things about the same topic in the same place.

    Thanks

    Katie
