NATIONAL NEST BOX WEEK (14-21 February)

Love is in the air as Valentine's day approaches. Birds will soon start to pair up and start thinking about finding somewhere to nest. Interestingly enough, the 14th of February is not only a day for giving flowers and chocolates to your loved one, but it is also National Nest Box Week, which is organised each year by the BTO. Their website gives plenty of helpful tips and advice.

Putting up a nest box is one of many ways to attract birds into your garden, so why not get involved and join in on National Nest Box Week and treat your birds to a new abode! Why not let is know about your nest box success stories.

  • Hi Ian

Thanks for your message.  Claire kindly looked into the situation and also sent me an Email.  Glad to hear the situation regarding mailing has now been resolved (the nestbox was free after all!).  \We will probably buy one whilst awaiting delivery........... problem is we only have one camera - what's the betting the birds choose the camera free box!

  • Hi Claire,

We put a Robin box up last year, today, I saw a Robin in the garden with leaves in it's mouth, and flow to the direction of our nestbox, I have since been watching and pleased to announce, they are building a nest.

I am so thrilled, will keep you posted.

    Regards

    Karen.

  • I have three boxes up, though not where I planned as I couldn't get to the trunks of the conifers due to the branches!  So now the boxes are on the fence.

  • I have several very old boxes around the garden - a great tit was having a look in one of them today.

I looked at the RSPB website to find that all nestboxes are 10% off. Grab some NOW!

'Dip a dee dah, dip a dee ay, we're not seeing any birds to-day...'

  • I'm hoping for another Blue Tit nest this year - we had one in 2008 and have put a new box up this year as we didn't realise we should have taken the old one down and cleaned it etc. after they had finished using it. We did have a Blue Tit checking it out the day after we put it up earlier this year but so far there hasn't been anything happening.

Was great watching them come out of the box, to the feeders, to the box, to the feeders... amazing stamina!

Hoping lots of us have nests in our gardens this year :)
