I have problems with cats using my garden as their own private toilet!
I have tried all sorts of things to stop them.
Next year I am thinking of making wooden frames about a foot square with netting on to put where the cats 'go'.
I am hoping that by being a frame I will be able to move these about easily as required so will still be able to weed and the frames can be moved around ie as plants grow out to cover areas.
Good idea or not?
Anyone else got other ideas?
It's not always easy to hug a hedgehog.
But that doesn't mean you shouldn't.
Hi Madpengiun,
We have tried all sorts of things over the years. Sprays/powders dont seem to work as they wash away in the rain. I know how frustrating it can be. I think if you make frames then it will just encourage them to keep coming back. Are they fouling in earth ? gravel ? chippings ? If so you could make it less easy by putting down some bigger stones/ gravel or little stepping stones so they have a less space to dig as they will come back to the same spot. Have you tried placing a few clear plastic bottles half filled with water around the garden ? The reflection seems to scare them.We paid £40 for an infra red cat deterrent about 4 months ago- placed it right in the path where they tend to get in and they walk straight past it without a care !! I have had a cat myself for 18 yrs, he is neutered and uses a litter tray - but I share in your frustration when other peoples pets do this.
good luck

The best deterrents in our garden are our dogs!

I have the same problem - they dig up my seeds and go for the birds. I too have exhausted the options in cat deterrents so now I have a water spray by the window and any feline loitering gets it! It doesn't harm them, but they don't like it. The problem is I have to be there for this to work.

Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.

The cats are fouling the earth.I have put lots of pots and slabs around but the garden tends to end looking a bit like a rubbish tip!
I can't see that the frames I have suggested making would encourage the cats to come back since they would have to 'go' elsewhere.
I thought the netting on frames might work as I could easily lift them to weed as I have tried just netting without the frames anf I just get all tangled up in it!
Will make up a couple and see how they work.

Yep, like everyone else I have terrible cat trouble since my neighbour purchased one last year! The big problem I have is that it uses my 4yr old's play area as it's toilet which is laid down to play bark....most unhygienic!
If I see it I send the dog out (he hates them!!) the cat soon moves then (about 100mph I reckon LOL). This is an immediate solution however within a couple of hours it's back again so the cycle starts again!!
I did find my neighbour emptying the cat litter tray in our hedge one day which helped to solve the mystery of the awful 'stench' we were getting when sat out having lunch in the summer! Also explained why just about every cat in the neighbourhood were using this particular area as their own public loo!!!....
The other problem that we now have is that the garden gets littered with bird remains where this cat is taking birds off of our feeders like they were candy!.....I wouldn't mind if it wanted to eat them but it just kills them and then leaves them for me to dispose of, I know this is just nature but I can't help but to find it very frustrating and upsetting to some degree!
only one thing to do when I see it in the garden now....open the back door and shout at the dog "CHOCO PUSSY CAT".....amazing how fast a cat can move with nearly 30kilos of brown & white Collie behind it!!!!.....
Here's my cat deterrent!!!.......'THE BROWN & WHITE FURRY EXOCET'.....aka Choco!!....
Get one.....even if it doesn't work 100% you can enjoy the feeling of 'getting your own back' a little!! LOL
