Hi, having just read the latest newsletter, I was wondering if anyone has any tips specifically for east scotland. I tried to do all the right things this year re grass height etc and planted home grown wild flower seeds, most of which I fear are more local to s england. Any hints on plant selection for next year? As far as our garden bird news is concerned: in the last week several robins have appeared and singing very noisily. Yesterday saw the return of a family of long tailed tits and today after months away two starlings back at the bird table.

Can't advise specifically on E Scotland - I live in S Yorkshire, but what I do is scatter mixed wild flower seed and take note of what grows. My soils quite clayey but I get a lot of sun, and so far, nasturtiums, mayweed, and Nigella, have been very successful as well as sunflowers which must have seeded from my sunflower hearts as I didn't plant them!

You could put some heather in your garden, maybe azaleas (outdoor ones) ours like the clay soil. I agree with apple, maybe seeds as well. Getting some starlings now in the garden.

Jo, where are you exactly? I'm in Aberdeenshire north of Aberdeen about 12 miles from the coast.

I think it's very hard to follow the advice given when you live up here; but I read an awful lot of books and mags and, pretty much, all I plant is recommended for birds, bees or buutterflies.
