Agapanthus

Hi,

I know this sounds a bit daft, but I bought a new blue agapanthus to remind me of my holiday In New Zealand earlier this year.  It has flowered just the one flower head, can anyone advise when is the best time to cut the stem and head off, as I assume you treat it as any other flower and dead head.

  • Hi Meerkat

My OH's parents have Agapanthus plants and they always deadhead as the flowers fade. You can leave them and collect the seed but they take what seems like forever before you get decent-sized new plants (anything from 2 to 4 years).

The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.

The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!

  • Hi Meerkat,

I have some agapanthus in pots - they like to be pot bound- . I usually cut stems off towards end of season. Not sure if it is the right thing to do. They can be divided in springtime.

    Bye for now

  • Many thanks Squirrel and Sacha for your advice, I don't think I will bother with seeds, mine is growing in a pot so nice to know they don't mind getting pot bound, especially as I bought a nice new pot to put it in, pampered plants I just hope it realises and keeps growing for me.

If you are going to grow your agapanthus in a pot, make sure it's in a pot which is wider at the top than the base, so that you can slip the clump out to divide it when necessary, or over time the clump will expand and break the pot.

  • Many thanks for all your advice Luckily Wattle 15 the pot I especially bought for it is a lot wider at the top, so should be able to grow a while before it needs dividing.  Thank you Louloudi 15 for the link to Phil the Gardener very useful.
