Ok so I am a wildlife amatuar and i would love to attract the birds into my garden but i would only be able to use pots and window boxes as my landlord does not want me to make changes to the garden!! Trouble is I am not very green fingered and have no idea when it comes to plants so would need something relativley easy to look after, also I cannot have poisonous berries in my garden due to my 14 month old any advice would be appreciated thanks anouska
Can't go wrong with grasses in my opinion. Thistles are nice to look at when in flower goldfinches love them when they've seeded :o) Teesles (as before) Anything grassey that seeds. Buddleia for butterflies. Cottoneaster although have to admit unsure on the berry side of that they may or may not be poisonous :o$ A quck google search will help with that :o)
Hostas attract slugs an snails which then eat all the leaves but give food to frogs/toad/hedgehogs and birds
Small water area obviously out of reach of little un a small shallow dish on the floor changed daily is better than nothing :o)
I'm sure others will think of other stuff, if not I'll have another think :o)
Thankyou I will look some of these up. my grandmother always had buddleia in her garen and I always thought it was beautiful so i will try that tahnks again anouska
Just thought of a couple more things that are suitable for containers.
Hebe Lovely flowers for butterflies (evergreen plant that you can also get variegated varieties) Just be careful not to get the larger shrub variety.
Vinca or periwinkle imo is just lovely be aware that it trails though and puts feelers out to re root so you would need to trim these if in a container.
Michaelmas daisy needs full sun though.
And the one I could kick myself for forgetting! Sunflowers with your toddler you could plant them from seed and see who's grows the tallest. I loved doing that as a child :o) once the flowers die and dry out the seeds will be loved by birds and you could keep a few back to start the process again next spring :o)
Hope that helps
