Window Boxes

A few years ago I decided to erect window boxes to brighten up the cottage. I never realised just how attractive they would be to the wildlife. Bees, Butterflies,Ladybirds and the Wren, who loves to rummage about in them and eat all the bugs, which is very good of her considering I never use pesticides.

Other years I have emptied them and the tubs and baskets when they finish flowering, but this year I left them. Even though the temperature was below freezing and the plants were gone the little Wren continued to visit the window box, I started by putting some finely grated cheese in there for her but then the Robin and Chaffinch turned up so I put meal worms and chopped nuts in there, and then along came the Blackbird so sultanas were added.  I also put food in the hanging baskets and the tubs closest to the door and I have a small water feature on the step so I can sit in the warm and watch the birds.

I will be doing the same thing next year as it so nice to see the birds close up, and it cheers up a dull winters day.
