We were on Holiday in Weymouth aroung 10 years a go and spotted a lovely multi petalled poppy growing on some wasteland. I grabbed a seed pot and sprinkled them around the rockery and front garden and they have been coming up ever since. The strange thing is as time has gone by they have lost the multi petals they use to have but still have the lovely colour a free but ever lasting souvenir of a great holiday :o)

Nice story Shane.

Thank you very much Sheena
Hi Shane
What a lovely coloured Poppy and a great reminder for a special holiday for you.
I am glad you thought ahead about taking some seeds and they have grown well in your garden rockery.
Wonder why the petals have reduced in amount - wonder if someone has the answer for that here.
Nice story and thank you for sharing. It brought a smile to my face

Thank-you and I'm glad it made you smile :-)
If someone can answer the petal reduction thing that would be great?
Regarding the loss of petals - the only thing I can think of is that hybrid plants may lose their distinctive features over time (eg multi-petals) and revert back to their 'natural' state (in this case, what looks like an opium poppy). There's probably a more technical explanation than that but that's the gist!

Thanks Cartimandua
Hi Shane,
It's a lovely poppy you've got I should imagine the original was a beauty - have to agree with Cartimandua on this. In our garden I have pinched cuttings and seeds from flowers I have seen over the years (not wild flowers I hasten to add!) and they are not a patch on the original plant I saw. :-)
