When can I trim garden hedge !

Hi everyone

I know this must have been asked before, but can anyone tell me please when it will be ok to trim garden hedges.

Many thanks

Linda

What a wonderful world :))

  • Hi ilovebirds

There are lots of threads and many different opinions on when to cut a garden hedge.

I would trim it as soon as there are no birds nesting in there.

I typed 'hedge' into the search box and all of these threads came up. There are plenty of different opinions on when you should trim it though:

  • Hi ilovebirds

I agree with Woodpecker that it is best to trim hedges when there are no nesting birds.

There are so many different sorts too.Try this little site it helps me when I need info on any new additions to the garden or plant info, www.bbc.co.uk/gardening. There is a plant finder and search engine on site where you can find answers to your query.

    Hope this helps.

    Kind regards

  • Hi Woodpecker

Many thanks for your reply, I never thought of putting 'hedge' into the search box.  I will have a look at all the threads and see what I can find.

    Hi louloudi

Thanks for your reply as well, I will also look at the bbc gardening site.  We are going to the Gardeners World Show at Birmingham this week,so maybe get some advice from there  !

    Many thanks,  Linda

  • I'm not sure why I have it in my head that conifer hedges should be trimmed in August.

I may be totally wrong because I don't know where the idea came from at all.

  • Hi all

We generally do not recommend the cutting of trees or hedges between March and August as this is the peak breeding seaosn for hedge nesting birds in the UK. Autumn is fine for many types of hedges but not those that produce berries, in the case of berry producing bushes it is essential that the cutting takes place once the berries have been eaten by wildlife.

Now is the time to sit back and enjoy the lush foliage and to allow the birds to do the same!
