I have what seems a daft question! I planted a short bit of hedgerow (6-7 metres) about 8 years ago. It is a mixture of native plants ( Spindle & Viburnum flower ok), but I would have expected the Hawthorns to be flowering by this age. I have to keep it trimmed to a certain extent, but only do it by hand with secateurs so I can leave plenty to flower (in theory!). I have seen hedges cut back very short every year that are covered in flowers in Spring. Anyone have any idea why mine won't flower?!
Hi Rose
It may not be old enough yet. I'd expect it to start flowering within the next few years though. Many farm/roadside hedges are decades old, they flower on the previous years growth so as long as the flail cuts don't take it all off they will flower every year.
Warden Intern at Otmoor.
Think it will soon start flowering, ours is now 10 years old and flowered the last 2 or 3 years.
Thanks, Sooty & Ian, that's brilliant news! I forgot they are really trees, which take longer to reach flowering age than, say, shrubs. I'll go out later and have a word, tell them you say they have to flower next year!
