Remember the Breathing Places initiative back on December 6th last year? The 'Tree o'clock' agenda where we could plant a wild species of tree and the whole nation had to do it within a certain hour? (11a.m-12p.m. I think it was). Well, I did it and chose a Wild Cherry tree, whereupon my son and I found a suitable spot by a pond and dug it in. We both went back to check it a month ago after the first heavy snowfall, pleased that it was unravaged and safe. Today, I was on the way back home, after spending the day doing some conservation work on the Wye Valley Walk. I thought I'd drop in and check how 'Charlie' was doing. Not my idea - my son felt the need to name the tree, so Charlie it became.
Well, Charlie has been assaulted. At least a third of the tree's height has been decapitated and was lying neatly alongside the rest of it and it was half dug out, with roots exposed to the world. What the hell is that all about?? I quickly covered the roots again and firmed it in place. The severed bit I could do nothing with, so why I brought it back home with me I don't know. Call it shock. The remaining whip looks healthy, with buds just visible, although it only stands about 7 inches tall now. What, pray, could be responsible for the destruction of Charlie? A Rabbit? A Rat? A Spiteful Farmer?

Hi Colin
Love your humour LOL.
I found your last post very comical. Simply just the way you expressed all your thoughts about the day out digging in robust way for all you are worth in one day - flexing all those muscles.
Now you will find this silly but it has taken me a while to work out what is on your Avator. I though it was a plucked turkey hanging with its wings jutting out at an angle - now I realise it is a flower head LOL
I think i need to go to Specsavers
Regards
Kathy and Dave
Hi Kathy,
Thanks very much, although I tend to just dash down the first thing that comes into my head when I recall or think about things. It's the only dashing I will be doing for a couple of days - those flexed muscles are complaining a bit.
LOL - You thought my Avator was a plucked Turkey?
Hell - I'm not coming to YOURS for Christmas dinner!
It is actually a flower, yes. It's a Snake's Head Frittilary and one of the bulbs I planted in my front lawn about 18 months ago. This was one of last year's flowers in its prime and I'm looking forward to seeing my new batch in a few weeks.
Talk to you later - I'm off to work in a while. Bloody nights (sigh).
Now i know what I am seeing with my 'old' glazed eyes, your Snakes Head Frillilary is beautiful indeed. The colour is beautiful.
I see you are a keen plant grower from your posts. Love to hear how your other plants ie Foxloves grow.
Any pictures by chance and I would love to see them - no Turkeys though! {wink}
Not so good with the night shift - would not like that myself.
Have a good evening

Hi Corriepaw,
An excellent day's conservation work by the sounds of it. Perfect weather, a job well done, and plenty of physical exercise thrown in. The walkers should be happy. Well done, and don't forget to tell us about next month's day. Some photos would be great - before and after. That is if they'll have you back with your pitchfork.
Cheers, Linda.

Thanks for the update on your day,a very productive one at that.It must have been a good feeling to see what you had all achieved at the end of those four hours.Well done ! Mind you the aches might last a bit longer but it's worth it,for the end result.Good job you had the nice weather aswell.
Sorry to say this I also thought your Avitar was a Turkey Oh dear!

I thought it was a plucked turkey too, though I did think it was a bizarre avatar for an RSPB supporter! So then I figured it was a bag of peanuts with a very elegant grey bird clinging to either side.
I don't think I'll be winning any Twitcher of the Month awards just yet...!

Hello Blackbird, Littleowl and Badgerbread!
Well, that settles it, then. You have all independantly come to the conclusion that I had used, as my identity, a plucked and dangling Turkey. This is not a wholesome thought. The Avatar must go! That is my challenge for the year (I am a man of small ambitions) to take a photo that my fellow forumites can actually recognise. I can't promise that it'll be soon but, God help me, I'll capture an image fit for my new friends to see.
On a more rational note - I was very pleased this morning to come home from my nightshift, walk bleary-eyed into the kitchen and discover that some of my seeds are already starting to sprout! Oh, yippity-joy and much capering. My Cosmidium and Cosmea have taken it upon their selves to lead the way to planthood. May my clumsy hands give them succour and the chance to flourish. I've gone and ordered another load of seeds via the Net yesterday as well, so I definately need to sort my soil problem out. Let's see now - compost.....manure....sharp sand....Ralgex muscle rub.....
Looking forward to the new Avatar!
I have purchased some flower seeds and I must start planting some of them indoors soon.I have never grown flowers from seed ,only veg.I wish now I had bought seed to sow direct outside but hey-ho!.I suppose it's worth It for the end result.
