Birdwatch

Well I knew I had some intelligent birds visiting my garden but I had no idea they were so crafty. I duly did my birdwatching stint for the big birdwatch and had the usual crew turn up,Blue Tits,Great Tits, Nuthatch,Woodpigeon etc and posted my results online as normal.

Naturally the next day I had the more infrequent visitors of Long Tailed Tits, Thrush and Jay all popping in and out.......AArrggghhh why could'nt they be more accommodating (is that spelt right?!!) and visit the day before!

Could'nt Birdwatch be done over two half hour stints on two days rather than one.......how can an accurate count be done when only half the birds show up?The Long Tailed Tits come in groups and soooo sweet, like little teddy bears and actually the Thrush that turned up may not have been a Thrush because I thought I saw a flash of red under his wings as he took off but could'nt be absolutely certain....eye's play tricks when you get all excited to see something different!!

Remember my Rogue Robin I had the problems with, well he's still here but behaving very well now, no tapping on my window at dawn and no chasing other birdies away, but still as greedy!

Love and care for nature

  • Hi Nuthatch, we all experience the same thing, especially  when our ' regulars' don't turn up. The RSPB say that they know it is not an accurate figure but an average count and the system does work. If it was over two days, you could count the same birds twice or the birds you miss, could be in a neighbour's count.

Good news about your robin. You may see that he/she has a partner soon.

  • Hi I tried to do the Birdwatch as well but I couldnt believe it when we had only 9 starlings when we usually have around 40. Not only that but hardly any birds appeared. Of course this week we have had an enormous number of different birds. You are right when you say they are crafty. I can just imagine lots of different birds gathering in a place where no one was watching and thinking lets have the humans on for a while. Still I forgive them cos I love them so much.
