Hi, they looked more like a sparrows up to their head. I'm not a birdwatcher but knew I'd never seen one before. I immediately googled them and I would say they were definitely white-crowned sparrows. I did read they may have been blown here by the recent storms.
I don’t wish to cast aspersions, but female reed buntings are very often misidentified as white crowned sparrows by non-birdwatchers. Whilst wcs do rarely occur in the UK, the chances of you finding two in your garden are highly unlikely. You’ll need good quality photos to convince anyone.
