You could have a look at the RSPB shop they do them starting at just over £150.00. and you would be helping the website and the birds.

One thing I would say is go for one which is angled they are much more comfortable to use.

I think you have to make up your mind what you are going to do with the scope.  Is it for the garden or reserves?  How serious minded is your hubby about birds etc... There is a lot going on to suit all types of budgets on the websites.  I would buy one that is a well known maker, and you know that it is:

1. Reliable.

2. You can get the parts for it

3. Will last a lifetime.

The Scope we have allows us to have the 'attachments' for use our camera  - but no excuses - we need to learn how to use the camera with the scope now ourselves!

As well as the Scope you need to buy the additionel Tripod for it to sit on - there are some good deals if you look around ie we got a tripod and another table Tripod for free.(buy one get one free comes to mind)

We have the 'Opticron' make and we are pleased with the results.

Rather than me posting loads of general advice for you I've attached our information leaflet "selecting and using your telescope" written by the Wildlife Enquiries team.

This tells you everything you'll need to know from eyepeices and objectives, maintenance and RSPB suppliers etc..
