Hi-
my tripod has different lengths of insulating foam around the legs for comfort when being carried on my shoulder. The yellow section is the leg I lift it by if putting it on my shoulder.
HISTORY of Tripod use in Britain
Tripods werent used much until the late 1970s when scopes became shorter and Brit birders took after the Americans - scopes began to become everyday items for Birders. It became the way to tell Birders from Birdwatchers for awhile. By the 1990s virtually all serious birdwatchers carried one on a tripod.
As scopes got heavier ( better lens glass is heavier ) a problem emerged in the 1990s/ 2000s - carrying a heavy scope on the shoulder for long periods can not only be uncomfortable but can cause damage to the joint etc. Some people now use a scope back pack. Scopes in the last few years have got lighter- magnesium bodies etc.
Thanks for the explanation and enjoyed reading your answer Seymour.Worth thinking about with the foam as the scopes and tripod are heavy to carry on your shoulder. I have been looking at the back pack but they are expensive but I think I may invest after Christmas. At the moment I carry it on my shoulder as my hubby uses a mobility scooter so he can't carry it and we have thought of putting it in the bag he has on it at the back of the seat but it could be an expensive mistake lol. I have an olivon tripod and scope and the tripod is quite heavy but sturdy .
