Outdated seed

I bought some seed about 6 months ago and it's now well out of date.
Only about 25% has been used.
The seed is even sprouting.
Have been away from home for a few months and even the pigeons won't  touch it.

Seems a pity to throw it away but not sure what else, if anything, I can do with it.

  • Its a shame the seed went out of date by several months and as it is sprouting I wouldn't use it as it may not be safe. I would tend to buy smaller quantities in future and store them in cool, dry place. I used to store my bird seed in the garage/shed area inside one of those Cold boxes used for picnics or putting iced drinks in. It kept food fresh for longer and no chance any mice, etc. getting into the bags.

  • Is there anything that can be done with the old seed, apart from binning it?

I doubt it would be any good and could be risky using it so unfortunately I would say your only option is to ditch it and then maybe buy smaller quantities to store in a cool dry area.     Sorry as I know it's expensive buying bird food.
