Forum Map & navigation tips

Since people seem to be having trouble finding the old sections of the forum, I figured I'd put up a "map" of where the old sections are so here goes (hopefully I won't get lost!)

There's also a special forum for Wales under Get Involved > We Love Wales!

To return to the Main community homepage - just click the RSPB logo/Community icon at the top left of the corner.  This used to take you to the main RSPB page, but now will just take you straight back to the community home page :-)

Hope this helps a few people find some lost sections of the forum!  I think I have all the ones in the old forum listed :-)

  • Hi RSPB Techies

This is what I see when I use the drop down menus.

    Wildlife Tab

    Places To Visit Tab

    Get Involved Tab

     Our Work Tab

It would be useful if the following links could also be added:

    All Creature Forum - www.rspb.org.uk/.../13609.aspx

    Photography Forum - www.rspb.org.uk/.../19351.aspx

The Tea Room Forum - www.rspb.org.uk/.../2542.aspx

Where To Watch Wildlife Forum - www.rspb.org.uk/.../1920.aspx

Wildlife In The Garden Forum - www.rspb.org.uk/.../905.aspx

    Cheers

    Richard

PS - Where are the Good Eggs gone ????

  • Hi Richard

If you click on the Blue Tabs, then they all open up. They are all clickable links. Ignore what it says when you hover over the Wildlife Tab, just left click on it, and then left click on the Forums Tab, and you see all the different forums that you are looking for as clickable links. It's the same with all of the Blue Tabs, they are all links that open when you click on them, then you can select any of the forums within that Tab.

The moderators advised us that the Good Egg name badges and the Moderator name badges would go temporarily but they are trying to fix them. That was in the forum update thread.

    Best wishes Chris

I am bit lost, I have suddenly developed 3 bars and a symbol telling me I am a man.  These appear at the bottom of entries but not all entries.  The bars appear to tell you where you sit in the league of participants and the symbol obviously tells you who is male or female. (what happens if you haven't disclosed that information I dread to think).

I quite like the male / female symbol, it is sometimes difficult to tell with all these false names on here.  I am not sure of the benefit of knowing where I sit in the league, especially as I have no idea how many people are on here.

    Hi Bob

I have also been seeing this and I didn't have a clue what it was all about. I don't think it should be there at all.

I don't know why it sometimes appears and it sometimes doesn't, and I'm not sure what the bars are supposed to mean. How can there be a league table? Surely not

    Best wishes Chris

    Hi Chris

Sorry, but to me it's not good enough to click here and then click there to find out what it does. When you click here or there what you click on should self explanatory and not a "I wonder where this will take me" or even "Alice in Wonderland" pick me scenario. The website needs the RSPB Techies to rethink what they've done. Yes the old site had major issues but this current layout is far worse (sorry RSPB). We shouldn't have to solve the problem ourselves as the RSPB are paying a lot of money for this website etc. Just think if this was a corporate site where the customers had to tell the other customer how to order things ????

As I've said previously - I'm not taken by this current layout as it is far to difficult to navigate. Additionally the post window is far too small to read the posts and the avatars are way to small to be justifiable.

In some cases the signature bar at the base of the posts are far to big and can be larger than the actual post and as such rather distracting.

    Hi Richard

Most people who have been using it every day since the update now find it a better and much quicker site than the old one used to be, with lot's more features.

I don't think that clicking on a link to open the forums page is very different to how it used to be.

I agree that Avatars are too small and I think that is on the reported problems list. I don't understand what you mean about the post window being to small to post in. As soon as you click the Reply button below the post you wish to reply to, then click 'use rich formatting' which you will have to do to insert pictures and links, it opens up a very large window that allows you to highlight and quote parts of another persons post, add photos like before, make HTML links, Spellcheck, add text from Word in the Word box, and all sorts of clever stuff.

Once you get to know your way around I'm sure you will like it. I think it's a great improvement.

    Best wishes Chris

    Hi Chris

As I'm typing I'm hoping you are not taking it personally when I'm replying to your post above. I don't think it should be you or any other Forum Members answering or resolving my issues. Please be reassured that I am very thankful of the replies as I am finding things as a result of your help :-)

When I stated about the post window I wasn't on about the area in which replies are typed, I also know about the rich formatting as this is the only way to add quotes unless using the quote/quote method. Perhaps I'm using the wrong word by stating window, what I'm trying to say is that the posts made by others appear too small and can be difficult to read.

  • I've just discovered by complete accident: www.rspb.org.uk/.../default.aspx , however if I want to find it again where do I click (only RSPB Techies need reply)

  • Hi Richard,
I am replying to this because it's unlikely one of the Techies will read this thread in the near future. Forum members are using this thread to help each other with their own personal difficulties with the site.

The problem of small text and difficulty in reading posts has been reported on the Report a Problem thread and is being looked at by the Techies, but if you want to give them a reminder, then you would be best served by putting your thoughts down in the Report a Problem thread and the Techies will see it and will reply.

As for finding the page you gave us a link to, I see this as a problem you personally are having with the poor navigation facilities rather than a site problem in itself, and therefore is not really an issue for the Techies. CLICK on the blue tab "Wildlife". (Ignore the drop down menu). That will take you to the main Wildlife page and from there you can click on the Forum tab. You will then be on the page you want.

    Cheers, Linda.

  • Hi Linda & Chris

You are both diamonds - I assumed this was a Techie Thread - I'm getting it. I didn't realise the "Wildlife" had a link, I assumed it was just a drop down menu.

    The penny drops :-)

    Thanks to you both.

    Richard

  • Hi Richard

"I didn't realise the "Wildlife" had a link, I assumed it was just a drop down menu"

So did I, as would most people I should think.  The little down arrow on a tab usually indicates just that and from there you would normally choose one of the drop downs.  This new site has a whole new way of doing things!!!

Good luck finding your way around...
