a) how I can mute the sound recording on vids taken using Canon Powershot SX40 HS ??

I haven't done any video since tape days but I don't see why it shouldn't be a simple matter of running it through a video editor to remove the audio track. There are several basic (free) editors available for download. Audio from a built in mic is usually pretty poor and prone to picking up camera noise. I doubt if the Powershot has a socket for an external mic so you're probably better off going into the camera settings and turning audio off completely for future recordings.

Did try to find setting for mic when cam first new but had no luck - must admit I am no camera buff & still fumbling my way around - plus am old, imcompetent & impatient female!!!
Spoiled a couple of good vids of Kestrels by using less than ladylike language!!

Ha Ha G - mine seems to be excellent at picking up bad language - I used to get so frustrated when cam was new & seemed to get caught out often!! Behaved myself since but get all sorts of dishwasher/washing machine noise!!
