Etiquette Query

As a relatively new member on this forum I'm a little confused as to how certain aspects of it work.

When somebody poses a question whether it be about a birds ID or some other query who is it that  "says this is the answer"? Is it the instigator of the question when he/she has received a number of similar answers or is it the person who provides a confident answer?

When does a "possible answer" become "this is the answer" and how does it happen?

I'd be grateful for the advice of you long term members of the forum so I don't inadvertently cause any etiquette problems.

Tony

  • It is the person that posts the question that choses  the question answered.

  • I think it shows as 'possible answer' when it is the person that supplies an answer that clicks on it; this becomes 'this is the answer' when the question poser confirms it! At least that's how I understand it.... Generally I prefer to let the question poser choose unless I was 100% sure I'd given the right answer (which isn't often! Lol!)

    I think it is the original person who started the thread is the one who uses the 'this is the answer'

    It is up to them who they think is the best poster in the thread.

    You can have more than one member with 'this is the answer' too.

    That is my understanding off how the RSPB Etiquette works

    Unless someone knows different. {wink}

  • Hi.

    One thing that confuses me is.  What if you think more than one post is the answer?  I suppose in that case it's best just to thank the posters and decline from selecting an answer.  Or am I wrong?  I only ask this because I posted a question about bird food recently and I think all the replies are good answers.

    Paul.

    Warning!  This post contains atrocious spelling, and terrible grammar.  Approach with extreme edginess.

    hi Heron

    I have to say I do not really use the facility myself at all.

    To be honest I forget it is there most of time, and it is not important to me

    I see all people in the same light with valid answers, and people are not any different as one another.

    I have noticed that some people hit a few chosen posters with valid answer.  As you say it is difficult if everyone has given a good answer about a subject.

    Maybe it is down to personal choice as to how we use the 'answer' facility

    There are no hard and fast rules about it at all {smile}

    Love to hear what others say on the matter

    Regards

  • I have also noticed that when an answer is not chosen, an RSPB admin. member will eventually tidy up the site and choose an answer.
