There seem to be several problems with the "Insert photo" functionality. We are investigating them as a matter of urgency and are getting support from the Community software manufacturer.
The list of problems is as follows:
Problem 1
If you click the Browse button before the page has fully loaded, when you choose a photo the filename is not displayed and nothing further happens.Workaround: Wait until the page has fully loaded (you can tell because the Browse box gets bigger)
Problem 2
Even if you wait for the page to load, when a file is chosen the filename is printed in italics and it never says "Uploaded". The screenshot below shows what it looks like if it fails, is still uploading or is done. We are investigating this problem.
Problem 3
Photos that are uploaded are then corrupted (look incomplete). We are investigating this problem.
Problem 4
Photos do upload but they take a very long time. We are investigating this problem and it may be related to wider speed issues across the RSPB website.
Problem 5
When you choose a photo via the Browse button and then click the Insert button, it displays a message in red asking you to choose a file even though you already have.
Problem 6
After choosing a file, the name appears in italics but no progress bar appears. After several minutes, an error message appears in red underneath the Browse box.
Problem 7
An image is added and displays in the post editor but is missing when the post is saved and viewed on the site.
If you are experiencing a problem uploading photos and it is not one of these, please tell us below.
Thanks,
Graham

I can confirm that I know to wait for the bigger box to appear beofre browsing for pictures and the the pictures appear when you browse for them and are uploaded and you can see them.
However on pressing post there is then a very long empty post with no pictures and also text typed between pictures, for example as a heading for a picture also disappears. I got around this yesterday by posting two pics at a time and continually editing the post until all pics were uploaded.
Hope this explains what I mean

I've learned that I still have a lot to learn...

I uploaded 3 pix to Doggies "Feeder Tray" post with no problems yesterday.
Couldnt log onto the site last night but think that was my end and not a fault with the site.
A very old Shropshire Lad.
I still think a lot of Posters' photos being uploaded are on the large size....which is where the problem lies, I think.
For example, Sarah posted a lot of photos on her Barnes thread. I checked the first 4 or 5 and all were above 2mb. On the other hand, ChrisS' photos, on Doggies thread, are all less than 600kbs.
I ALWAYS make sure my photos are less than 500kbs and have never (touch wood) had ANY problems......
Large Posts with many (large) photos will always have problems on this Site.....it will time out....
Just my two'pennerth.....

I couldn't agree more, Graham. I have only ever had a problem once and that was when I uploaded a large file in error. I always reduce mine to 500kb or less and like Graham, have not had any problems. With my small files they upload quickly and safely, but I also am touching wood with my fingers crossed!!
Cheers, Linda.

Thanks for that Graham, I will make sure I reduce the size of pics in future. I usually do, not sure why I ddin't this time.
For a while everything seemed fine. But I'm now getting an intermittent fault.
With some photos (not all) they appear to upload OK, but when I preview the post, I'm seeing a broken image. This happens to the same photos all the time - and they are no different in size (dimensions and file length) than the photos which upload and display OK.

If you can't ID a bird, don't worry - just enjoy it!
My last post was before I read Graham's comments about file size. So I took one of my "problem" files, which was about 1.1 Mb and reduced the dimensions from 1024 x 768 px down to 800 x 600 px. This brought the file size down to 435 Kb.
This made no difference. The file appeared to upload OK, I pressed the "Save" button and looked at the preview. Still a broken image.
So it seems that, in every case, size DOESN'T matter :-(
