Known issue: Site very slow

We are aware that the RSPB website, including the Community, has been intermittently very slow for some users since 2 July. Please bear with us. We sincerely apologise for the frustration this is causing.

We are investigating the problem as a matter of urgency but have not yet discovered the root cause of the problem.

This thread will be updated with information as and when we have it. Thanks for your patience.

  • Graham,

You may or may not know that I have been one of the lucky ones, having experienced NO slowness, freezing, timeouts, hanging or anything else. The site has always run quickly and well for me. I use it from about 10am every day throughout the day and evenings at various times.

However, for the first time I am having problems right now. Timeouts and dead slow. I just hope this reply uploads.

    Cheers, Linda.

  • Everything seems back to "full speed ahead" since (um) some time yesterday.  Lightning fast today.  Thanks for all efforts!

  • Still having problems. I did manage to upload a photo earlier, but it took about an hour! (I didn't post the message in the end as by that time the image was largely academic).

Going back to those SQL errors that I (and someone else) spotted a few days earlier: I wonder if there's a problem with the database? I don't know how you store images on the web server/content management system, but maybe the they are referenced in database tables, and the files containing the table data have been fragmented across several disks or servers. Perhaps the DBMS needs re-tuning in general.....

  • Hi Graham,

Been impossible in the last few days for me to add pics (in any way, shape or form) to my posts. This is using an iMac with Safari. Have however now uploaded 3 pics without any problem from the Windows PC with Google Chrome....

  • Hi Graham, like MarJus, no way can I load any photos (nearly 4 days now) and the speed - even of posting a text message is minutes. I also use Safari with a Mac OSX. One of my posts this morning, had text lines merged together! I now have to log off the forum for most of the day because it is far too frustrating to read or send any posts.

    bye for now

  • Hi all,

We are still experiencing the same intermittent slowness. The infrastructure healthcheck did not reveal anything of concern.

However, in their investigation the hosting company have discovered that another of their customers appears to be suffering from the same problem. We are hopeful that they are close to identifying the issue.

We'll keep you updated with any further info.

    Graham

  • Graham,   This a test because the site is now so fast.  Have just updated to IE9.

Edit.  That took no time at all.  Will let you know if it reverts

  • We have identified a possible incompatibility between two pieces of hardware within our hosting environment. A temporary fix for this has been put in place and this does seem to have had a positive effect. We will be reviewing the performance over the next few days.

  • All still fine apart from the Arne live webcam where picture still freezes after about 2 mins, sometimes the sound continues, but need to constantly click on it.

  • Seems fine and dandy to me at the moment.
