Trying to load photos

I have never had a problem until this morning, either with new posts or replies.

I started a thread including several photos. They all appeared to upload properly, but 2 of them were missing. The 2 missing ones were numbers 2 and 3 in a sequence of 3 consecutive photos with no text between. I edited the thread, deleted the 2 missing ones, and uploaded them again above number 1 in the sequence rather than below. This time they worked.

I use XP Home with IE8 and sometimes Firefox.

It is a bit hit and miss for me - Mac & Safari.  I have just managed to upload 4 pics to a thread on id but now cannot upload some of an insect and I have reduced them down.

FYI - I have been experiencing the same problems with your image uploader for the last couple of weeks but it was never reliable to begin with. All my images are less than 1MB in size.

Steps to reproduce: Browse to Photos > Choose file... > Upload File > Browse... > Select File > Open

At this stage usually the image file name appears in the dialogue box, the green bar jumps to quarter full or half full and then nothing happens. But often the green bar fails to appear entirely and again nothing happens. Sometimes the bar fills completely but nothing happens. In all instances the Save button remains inactive.

I cannot believe this is affecting a minority of users. Have you tried testing from RSPB machines outside the office network?

At the very least there should be an error message generated by the uploader tool to notify the user of a failure. The coding is obviously incomplete.

I have never experienced this problem. All of the photos that I have ever tried to upload, have done so fairly quickly.

Sometimes the Browse box takes a short time to change to the full width version, but after I press Browse, select a photo and press Open, the green bar always fills and Uploaded always appears when it has filled.

I'm using Windows XP Pro, Firefox 5 and BT Broadband.

Tested in Firefox 3.0.5 on same machine and identical problem.

Similarly knackered in Google Chrome 12.0.742.112 where no progress bar appears.

We are investigating this at the moment. Unfortunately the software is off the shelf so we are unable to change it but we agree that it is badly implemented and we are chasing the software company for support on this issue.

We think there are a couple of problems:

1. the progress bar appears but the upload never completes

2. the progress bar doesn't appear

We are most concerned about the second problem and I'd really appreciate your help to troubleshoot it.

Can you let me know whether you've noticed any patterns or consistency in whether the progress bar appears? Or is it completely random?

I am repeating myself here, but for me personally it all seems to start with the Browse box. There seem to be two different versions of the Browse box, a very short one and a long three quarter width one. If the shortened version of the Browse box doesn't quickly change into the wider version of the Browse box, then the progress bar never appears when I select and try to open a photo.

Once I can see and select Browse in the wider version of the Browse box, the progress bar always works perfectly. IMHO the short version of the Browse box suggests an error has occurred. If people are only seeing this one, then I bet that is the cause of the problem

Mostly the progress bar appears for me, and occasionally not. However, whether it does or not, it eventually says "uploaded" and I press insert. All my photos have worked.

What I do notice is that in the upload box where it shows the title of the photo, sometimes the title is shown in italic font and other times in normal font. I have always wondered why this should be. In either event, the photos upload.

I should add that I always re-size the dimensions of my photos before uploading to no more than 1024 pixels across.

I have also noticed the 2 versions of the upload box, but if you wait a short time, it stretches to full size.

Sparrow, for me it is always in Italic font until the progress bar has fully completed and says Uploaded. Then it changes to normal font. I assumed that meant it had worked.
