Personal Messages

Hi to All,

I am one of the newbies on the forum and I am still finding my way round.

I was wondering if there is a way to send personal messages to other members as I have not seen a way to do this.

I am a member of other forums and they all seem to have this facility.

  • Just another point to ponder:

Every little 'extra' that is added to the website will slow it down some more, which I'm sure none of us want.  Setting up a website and then having to increase its capacity can be very costly, a factor which has to be considered with an organisation such as this.  Would we prefer to see donations used so we can chat privately with each other, or used in the protection of birds, the main objective of the RSPB?

    Hi there

Again I am afraid that I agree with 'Maureen' that this is a friendly place forum what I have discovered so far, and I feel it would be nice to keep everything open for all to see and read.  It keeps everyone together as a community of people as it should be.

Yes. there are other ways of contacting people - (hope that you do not mind me saying this at all Katie)

Example contact via the moderators (Nestbox) if this is what some people want private details for future contacts.

  • Hi to all,

As I have previously said we are all entitled to have and voice our opinion.

Some of you and I am sure there are more, think it is not wanted or needed. Tiger and myself and I  am sure there are more feel that it would be beneficial.

As for slowing the site down I have been in contact with the admin on another site I use  that has over 30,000 members and they say if it is set up  properly the speed  differance is hardly worth worrying about and they say the cost should be zero.

As for going through the moderators all the time this would mean them spending there time e-mailing differant members to ask for approval to pass on other members details (work I am sure they could do without).

What is wrong in just putting the facility there and let individual members decide if they use it or not ?.

  • I feel it has it's uses. If we had that facility I wouldn't have had to put my email address up for all to see in a thread today. Fortunately it's a "spare" email address so it's not the end of the world if it gets spammed...which is why I used that one. I have nothing to hide.

Make the most of today because, unlike Sky+, there isn't a rewind button.

  • Hi All

Paula, That is my point exactly. I have seen your post RE the free seeds where you have given an e-mail address and as you say it is there for all to see. If the facility was there you could simply ask members to send a personal message and therefore you would not run the risk of spam.

  • Hi Paula

We don't recommend putting your full e-mail address on the internet - it is one way that you might get spam (spammers search the whole web looking for e-mail addresses to use).

You could perhaps use something like [at] instead of @ so it's still clear what your address is to human beings, but the software used by the spammers won't be able to interpret it.

    Thanks

  • Thanks Katie, I never thought about doing it that way and have changed it. No-one wants my seeds anyway! Either that or no-one is venturing into the forums...which I suspect may be true.

Graham, I did think about that but I'd have to type up a reply each time and to be honest I just don't have the time or the energy to do that but thanks anyway for the suggestion. As I said it's a spare email address that I wouldn't be bothered if it was spammed.

  • Personally I think that a "confidential" message facility would be more trouble than it's worth. Supposing you acquired an "unwanted" correspondent . You'd need a blocking option and all this additional functionality adds to the cost and complexity of the site.

Every day a little more irate about bird of prey persecution, and I have a cat - Got a problem with that?

  • Agree with you, John B. There are other sites where our members chat so presumably they can contact each other there.  I want this site to remain as is.

  • Most of the big servers who have private message facilities have a load of adverts scattered all over the place.  Members who chat on the Facebook bloggers sight can send private messages to each other there so I agree with the  NO PRIVATE MESSAGES facility on here.
