Questions About This New System?

I am starting this thread as a place for people to ask questions about what I feel sure they find a very confusing system. I have been on forums for 10 years and moderated them for eight and I am finding some of the systems here a bit strange.

For example when it says "Request a forum" it really seems to mean "Start a thread". Also request gives the idea that you ask for it now and it might appear later. A bit confusing.

Also it has been suggested my a moderator that we put things in appropiate groups. Well there are only two groups at present and they no way reflect the breadth of topics that will eventually come to be. The one that immediately comes to mind is all the other ospreys.

The other thing that needs to be clarified is the range of topics. Is this a general birds forum or only the birds that the RSPB are interesed in.

Ok everyone else.......join in.

Maybe I should have started a group "Questions about the forum?"

  • Hi Tiger,

Please bear with us. The new site has only been live for a few days. It will take time for us to fill it out.

    Request a new forum
This is so that you can ask for a new forum - it is not for starting new threads. You should start new threads in the forum it is most relevant to.

    Groups
There are only two groups at the moment. This will change rapidly over the coming weeks. The reason we have suggested people use the Loch Garten group is that most of the people on the site so far are discussing the ospreys. The Loch Garten ospreys group has a specific forum for this purpose.

    Hope that helps explain things.

  • Oh dear. Just read Graham's reply to your post Tiger.

So, first, thanks for starting the thread. I certainly need it (as you know). Second, how in the world DO I start a new thread in the 'relevant' forum (what did he say- bother it, another half hour for the page to load whilst I have a re- read of what Graham said.) STANDBY !  I'll open another browser. Big sigh.

'New threads in the Forum it is most relevant to '  is what he said. Oh, so my question stands. HOW do I start a new thread in the relevant Forum . Is it just clicking on the 'Reply' button and making a 'post' ? Oh for crying out, why don't computers speak English. Please please forgive my frustration. And thanks for all the help you've already given Tiger.

  • Oh Cirrus I have found the answer. When you are in a group you you click < forum > and hey pesto a screen appears which allows you to start a new thread. However it is cleverly hiddden under the <write a post> button.

  • OK Tiger. Phase one completed. I have accessed 'Forum' from the 'Loch Garten Ospreys' Group.

I am keenly scanning for life forms - no no, that was in another life. Scanning for the screen cunningly hidden under <write a new post.>

Really ? Well, then, it is indeed MOST cleverly hidden. Hang about !

Rats! the only thing that seems to activate with a click is the <write a new post> button. I've clicked all around the <write a new post> button - NOTHING> . I've attemped to type  'starting a new thread here' all around the  <write  new post>  button. And below it , and below that , and so on. I hang my head in shame. Perhaps I should visit spec savers.

  • That is why it is cleverly hidden. You click <write a new post>   in order to start a new thread :)

I have tried it and it works.

Tiger, I tried to reply to your testing post on the loch garten opsreys group but when i hit send i got a box up saying NOT FOUND; RESOURCE NOT FOUND. Have i missed something? i am still toing and froing trying to find my way around and am trying allsorts, so maybe i missed something!!!

  • I deleted it before it got a chance to be permanent. You get a small period of time to delete a post after you have made it or in my case a thread.

OK, thanks for letting me know, i thought i was being more scatterbrained than ever!!

  • Er hum. I was hoping to type the loudest AH HAH, Tiger, BUT. (get ready to laugh out loud) this is what I got:

I just can't stop laughing. :)  What ho. I'm going to watch 'Send in the Dogs' on Channel 5 and then start again.

    Jolly hum dinging what oh.
