We would like to be able to listen audibly to bird songs on either an ipod or MP3 player (we possess neither) whilst out bird watching. If a picture of the bird was also available that would be a bonus. We do not want anything too complicated! Should we get an MP3 player or an ipod and do we have to load everything onto them ourselves? If so what software do you recommend?

It's pretty straightforward. I simply copied bird song tracks from a CD onto my cheapo mobile phone (which happens to do MP3s). You can use bog standard Windows file copying commands or sync with Windows Media Player if you're really keen. I haven't figured a way to associate a picture with an MP3 track yet but I'm sure it's possible.

If you don't mind forking out a bit of dosh you can purchase bird songs/calls from Birdguides (other suppliers may be available as they say). Here's the link.

They are fully catalogued and support images of the birdsong being played. I put them onto an mp3 player which I already owned. I've just tried to transer some of them onto my mobile phone and it works on that as well. Your phone needs to be able to support images like a simple phone with a buit in camera for example. Mine's a Nokia but nothing fancy.
As John B says you can just drag and drop them from your PC into the phone's memory or SD card
