I'm pretty sure this is some sort of racing pigeon, it's been visiting my garden for well over a month now, I have no problem with it being around, it used to be really tame and I was able to sit next to it in the garden hand feeding it, it's not tame at all now all I have to do is look out the window and 50% of the time it'll fly away, but when the postman comes he'll sit there and continue feeding.
I don't know whether it's male or female, just assumed it was a male lol, he's been named 'Pidge' by my family, and he's got 2 rings on his right leg one green and one blue. The green one is plain, but the blue one has letters and numbers on it.
He's a really pretty bird...
The only thing that concerns me is that last night on my way home from walking the dog at 10pm, he was sitting on the roof of my house huddled up sleeping in the rain and it made me feel bad :-( Is there anything I can do for this lovely bird?
Becca :-)
Hi Becca
a way to get the birds attention is to put seed in a can and shake the can.
Fanciers do this to get the birds into the loft. once had one that jumped into the car using this method.
Don't worry about it being on the roof.

We had a racer here for 3 days last week very tame I just left him to get some food inside himself and rest up he has gone now. But I would never catch him and return him to the owner as his life would be ended rather quickly :(
A very old Shropshire Lad.
The only thing with that Chris is when the bird is hanging around.
Your bird wiil have probably flown home after feeding and resting and could just as well met its fate.
If you catch and keep a ringed bird you are technically stealing.
So I suggest if you do catch a ringed bird try and contact the owner,if he isn't happy with the bird he will probably give the bird to you
I hope you're right Ray, I will catch it and contact the owner, I'd be wrong not to. I managed to get within a couple of feet from it this morning whilst putting the food out (shaking it like you mentioned) He didn't seem bothered by me, was more interested in the food, which I'd never stop putting out.
It'd be a dream come true if they let me keep the bird, ever since I was about 5 I've always wanted a pet pigeon, mad as it sounds! My mum and dad always said 'if you can catch one, you can keep it' I never did, so maybe I might be lucky with Pidge?! :-)

On the photo I can make the numbers out on the ring as 0348, try and get the other letters and numbers.
Good advice from Ray. Becca, sadly this bird is useless as a racing pigeon,it is bound to make pigeon pie.As you want a pigeon you will do everyone a favour by keeping it.Some people would cut the rings off, hint, hint.
Your concern deserves a reward.Good luck.
LOL Alan! Aww, I'd love a pigeon, hopefully I'll get to keep my pidge, I haven't seen him today but no doubt he's around somewhere and is bound to fly down at some point for his lunch :-)
When I do eventually catch him I'll definitely contact the owner but after a month I can't see them wanting it back.
Let's hope not, kinda want him myself haha!
Ah, lucky pigeon to end up in your garden :) I've caught feral pigeons before when necessary (usually to untangle stuff from their feet) by getting them to feed on the ground very close to my feet, then leaning over and getting hold of them (pinning the wings against their body) while they are head down busily pecking up seed. You have to make a smooth, confident grab!

Hi- these lost racing pigeons turn up at Bird observatories occasionally. One found at such was reported back to its owner but the Obs was told 'No it's dead, we think a Peregrine killed it'
Such is life

I won't let my poor pigeon end up as pigeon pie or anything else, aiki that sounds like a plan, if I can get him to turn around that is! I'm glad he ended up in my garden, I've seen him a couple of times today, but he flies off so easily when someone walks past :-(
