Magpies vs Crows on Isle of Skye

Just spent a week on Skye, and notice there are no Magpies but lots of Hooded Crows - are the Magpies driven away by the crows, or is there a simpler/less connected reason for the 2 populations? Would love to understand this better. Thanks!

  • It's not just Sky. Large parts of N & W Scotland are magpie free. To find their way to the inner and outer hebrides, they'd have to extend their range quite a bit, going through quite unsuitable habitat and avoiding human conflict. There is correlation between hoodie occurrance and magpie absence, but that'll be human and habitat rather than hoodies driving them away but carrion not.
