hello,
I know this link was up on the RSPB website, but thought it was of interest to share as details were presented on BBC Scotland News. http://www.rspb.org.uk/news/313641-serial-egg-collector-back-behind-bars about time in all eh?

“Like all great travelers, I have seen more than I remember, and remember more than I’ve seen.”
hello Lolly, I totally agree. Should be working off his sentence with the RSPB for free! Might educate he?
Lolly, The full protection of birds and eggs really started in 1954 and had been around in bits for over 50 years before that. People did it then when they probably knew more about wildife than children are taught today; after school clubs existed etc. The books that were written from which we all learnt often contained entries from collectors who remained so after the various Acts were brought; and those books are still around. No way will I justify the taking of any eggs but a lot of information was gathered about birds from watching nests.
Nowadays technology has taken over and lot is gained from remote cameras, recording devices, BTO, Bird Track entries and so on but there is still much more that sinks in with a hands on experience that we struggle to get children to have nowadays. If only we could better use the knowledge of some of these current egg collectors as they are experts in their own right.
I have noticed the increased interest in photographing birds is leading some to persistently call birds in with recordings. Again a no no in my view (and sometimes illegal) but I dont know how we stop the disturbance associated with that one.
