hi my friends as any of you heard anymore about the culling they are planning of the wild geese, nothing more as been said personally i think it is awful ,, i mean if we were geese we would be crapping all over its a bird thing,, just been on site and now they say it may not be legal this culling that they plan to do in windermere, i mean 200 geese this is outragous, what are they planning to do have geese in deep freeze for dinner,,, lets all stop it and what about the RSPB surely they can do something about this outrage,, we have geese round our lake,, if they came over and made a mess aon my washing would i complain NO its aa bird thing, even brian may from queen is against this
surely in this day and age why cant they be captured and transported somewhere else its awful ,,,just gona post what a lady as put in the times and star read this she lives in the lake district PLEASE...culling is never an attractive proposition-even if it were rats DJ but rats are a problem when they enter our enviroment, CANADA GEESE do not chew wires,spread disease,enter our homes,run wild in our tube stations etc, etc.What a ridiculous comparison, The lake is infact their enviroment, Take away the boats, jet skis,chemical toilets and human rubbish and you'd see a change for the better. These birds do not cause problems day after day this lady then says she lives in the lake district and they dont know what they are talking about.... the sight of the geese flying over says a guy in canada is out of this world. i say instead of culling geese lets start culling some politicians and the heirachy who use the jet skis and dont like the geese,,,,,,,,,,failing that bring them to escomb to our lakes, or low barns they will defionatley take to them,,,,,,,
Gracie,I think you will find this was discussed in depth under the "wildlife protection"heading at the end of last month and many of us aired our views.

While I'm never a fan of culling unless it's for conservation of biodiversity purposes and evidence led, there is nothing illegal about a planned Canada Geese cull. It happens legally and quite routinely all around the UK from time to time.
Canada Geese are on the 2012 General Licence permitting their control (by lethal means) in certain circumstances and by authorised persons. With a UK Summer population in excess of 80,000 they're not of conservation concern. They're an introduced species so their presence here is, in some ways, controversial.
I'm not about to defend the cull (I haven't seen the supporting evidence) and I'm sure you're right about other pollution sources affecting Windermere. Parliament, however, didn't have to give any go ahead on this matter as it wasn't necessary. I'd be a bit careful with all this talk about killing people if I were you.
Incidentally I doubt if anyone is has oven ready Canada Geese in mind. They're reportedly one of the most inedible species going.

I'm not into the killing of anything but I would have thought the easiest of things to do in keeping certain geese down in a simple way is to remove or prick some of the eggs, why can't be that be done

Hi John, I agree with your comment, there has got to be an alternative to shooting of these geese, it is horiffic to think of these geese being shot while nesting, it is barbaric!!!
There are always differerent methods of dealing with things, and what you suggest is far more humane.
You may all have seen the news already but in case you have not, the cull of the Canada geese at Windermere has been shelved in favour of some new non-lethal measures that have been put forward. BBC article here.
