Be wildlife safe this bonfire night!

Staying safe on bonfire night is really important for yourself, your family and your pets but please also spare a thought for wildlife.

A couple of things to consider, firstly, if you are having a bonfire, please build it on the day of burning so that any critters that may be seeking hibernating spots don't get cooked. Hedgehogs are especially vulnerable to this.

If you are setting off fireworks, try to avoid areas where you know birds choose to roost. Many hedges, trees and climber covered walls offer birds a great place to sleep. Nesting boxes are also occupied by roosting birds at this time of year so try to keep away from those.

You may notice a few blogs about this on the communities site and we have issued a press release.

Stay safe and enjoy Guy Fawkes night!

  • Hi Ian

    Good information and advice

I have say I hate fireworks they are scary even for me

Hopefully wildlife and pets alike are not too shocked when the firework displays start

  • I firmly believe that only licensed authorised displays should take place. Fireworks should not be on sale to the general public.
I shall have to turn Strictly up loud tonight so the budgie doesn't fall off his perch

Of all creatures, man is the most detestable, he is the only creature that inflicts pain for sport, knowing it to be pain.

  • Ian I agree with all your points, but to JudiM do you really watch Strictly.

  • Maybe JudiM's budgie likes to get a few dancing tips from Brucie! Another good reason for going to an organised authorised display is that they are often cheaper as well and are far enough away from habitation. As a pet owner I cannot reiterate enough the amount of distress that fireworks cause when nearby.
