You may have heard or seen on the news the current crisis going on in the Southern Hemisphere where a large ship grounded on a well known reef, spilling tonnes of oil into the sea. You can read about it on the BBC online pages here.
According to the reports coming through this has already resulted in little blue penguins and shags being rescued. The oil also poses a threat to many species of cetacean that are found in these waters. It's early days to gauge the full extent of the damage but this is bad news.
It will be very interesting to see what comes of the investigatiion into how this occurred given the bizarre circumstances of the ship running onto the reef, apparently it was calm seas!

I think someone is going to be in BIG trouble because they don't seem to take things that threaten wildlife lightly over there! And rightly so! Throw the book at them.
