You may have seen this on the news or on some of the other blogs on this site, see here and here, there is the possibility that EU policy changes could result in the funding for wildlife friendly farming initiatives being cut. The benefits to wildlife and in particular farmland birds can be amazing if these schemes are applied in the right way, we want CAP reform to benefit farmers and wildlife, removing this funding at such a crucial time could be catastrophic.
You can help farmers, farmland birds and other wildlife associated with the farmed environment by a simple e-action, click here and join us, it took me less than a couple of minutes to enter details, tweek the email and press send, your support is much needed and much appreciated!

I've signed too - hopefully the Eurocrats listen and stand by their aims to reduce biodiversity loss because this sure isn't the way to go about it!

Sooty, I wouldn't agree that they have become loved overnight as they have been indispensable to the countryside for a lot longer than that (at least a week!!!).
It was nice to see on BBC Points West an item about this, featuring both RSPB and local farmers.

Yes very funny Bob,just a joke really but it is really serious all round as even if pillar 1 grants are cut if it seriously affects farmers incomes they will be less inclined to do things for wildlife.Experts would have us believe these wildlife grants are a piece of cake for farmers whereas the reality is they can get income approaching a £1,000 from crops at the moment and more than that from milk.There is no way wildlife grants fulfil that gap if farmers do wildlife so has to be for the love of it.What a pity some experts will not explain this and instead give a different explanation.The schemes desperately need making rules and grants much simpler as they cannot expect farmers to have degrees.Of course I spoke of income not profit.
By the way Bob looking at Som Orn Site the message board for latest news there do not seem many birds on Avalon Marshes,think it is more a Autumn,Winter,Spring place.
