At the bottom of the field where i walk - someone has put a magpie in a very small cage - so small it can't even flap it's wings - it has no shelter from rain or sun and is very stressed. I have also seen 2 crows in a very small cage in similar circumstances and was told that it is legal because they are "vermin" and that it is to protect songbirds.
This seems to be a very cruel practice- please can we join together and get this made illegal
lou
Woodpecker is quite right - the rules for trapping magpies etc are very strict and can be found here: www.naturalengland.org.uk/.../wml-gl06_tcm6-24151.pdf
The trap you saw seems very illegal and cruel and should be reported to the RSPCA or Wildlife Crime Police unit immediately. (If it were me in this situation I'd take photos of them, send to the police.. then I'd probably let the trapped birds out on this occasion.)
"] Well Bob we had better get the corvids (along with raptors) a better P.R. agent they seem to be the root of all evil in the avian world.

I think Seaman was being sarcastic Mrs T ...
But I do agree with you about crows being intelligent and opportunistic. They're like foxes in a way - reduce them in a locality that gives them a living, and they will make up the numbers again. No amount of hunting, shooting or trapping will change that.
;-)

Seriously thinking about trying harder!
Corvids are the most interesting group of birds for anyone taking time to study them, always entertaining and such opportunists as has been said in this thread.

Birding is for everyone no matter how good or bad we are at it,enjoy it while you can
Its ok Jackdaw, i appreciated that Seaman was being sarcastic :)
In defence of Seaman I think he was just being a bit humourous and although we differ would not like it to be thought he was being sarcastic, have never known him sarcastic but humourous many times.
yes, maybe i should have typed humourous -not a bad line to take to lighten a weighty topic such as this!
For those that like corvids and some of their antics there are a few of my pages here to 'magpie' through:-)

Whenever this topic comes up on the forum and it doe so quite often)the final result usually is that we are never going to get 100 % agreement and this time will not be any different but it is good we can air our different opinions.
Yes nice one Mrs T it is sometimes hard to differentiate between sarcasm and humour but feel confident it was humour and probably hard for anything to be added to this thread. At least it has been relatively polite and no one going to get kicked off of forum it seems so think it a good time for me to leave this thread as I have been given opportunity to air my views without being censored so thank you all Mods.
:) , looks like we all agree that we disagree
It's both what you do and the way that you do it!
