Hi, nextdoor to my house there is a property development going on and they have chopped down a major tree where many birds used to nest. Sadly, the birds have nowhere to nest and are just constantly flying about and also their song has changed to more high pitched which is obviously signifying distress. Is there anything I can do?
Thanks
I hope the birds weren't nesting in the tree!
There are things you can do to help though - there are various different types of bird boxes you can get for different types of birds, or if you are good at the woodwork you can make your own to try and encourage them to nest in your garden. It is probably a bit late for this year, but if you put some up you may find they are used for roosting in through the winter and they may then nest there next spring. :-)

It's quite possible they were nesting! I have often used bird boxes but have found that they are not used. Is there any way I can attract birds to these?
Not really - the key with bird boxes is to get the right box in the right place, direction is also very important as well as shelter for some species. If the box remains unused after a couple of years, repositioning to a new site could help.
The RSPB has some excellent advice on chosing and siting a nest box here - www.rspb.org.uk/.../index.aspx
Has the tree only just been chopped down ?I think that the birds would soon settle down and not be flying around agitated for long.Depending on the breed of bird they may try breeding again nearby, they are quite adaptable to changes, often better than us
