It has come to my attention that there is a petition going around to stop a pub in the Isle of Wight from serving Rook Pie. The accompanying letter says: 'It appears the serving of Rook is not legal'
Does anyone know what the current law on this is; as Rooks are legally allowed to be killed and as far as I know there is no law saying you cannot eat them afterwards?
They are calling for people to tell the RSPB and the police about this 'wildlife crime' - poor old RSPB - surely they've got better things to spend their hard earned cash on than responding to reports such as this? And the police are far more worried about real wildlife crime amongst all the other things they have to deal with?
Things are stretched enough without badly educated people wasting valuable resources.
They are combining this petition with one to stop the killing of parakeets in the south east - surely they know better than to stop this sensible idea? Parakeets are damaging to our native wildlife and there are so few of them at the moment that irradicating them from the UK early would be the best idea? Shame this didn't happen with other alien invaders to our shores (grey squirrels and mink to name but a few...)
Maybe we should do more to educate the general public better on what is good for wildlife and what our laws are that help with this?
...and another update from our local press...

Hi there
What can I say but I feel a sadness for the Rooks in question or any wildlife that is protected...to be manipulated such as Rooks.
We have enough food on this planet without resorting to other 'foodstuffs'. The person who caused all this upset what was he thinking.
The Cavemen days of searching for your food in the wild is gone so let history remain in the past
The restaurant involved should have known better.

Kathy and Dave
Hi Kathy and Dave,
I agree with what you have said. I feel, that the "punishment" is just a laugh. Not even his "license to kill" has been revoked. However, if you would know the person who has been cautioned, then you probably wouldn't ask the question, what he was or is thinking whilst killing / murdering fledgling rooks, or other animals.
Kind regards,
Stephan.
Hi Steve
Exactly...
The thing is that this person is selling Rook meat - so he is making a financial profit for his own needs.
He should have a real job instead of taking money from illegal killings of wildlife.
It is not fair at all!
The law in this country is full of red tape and loopholes. There should be one law and if it is to kill a protected species - do what needs to be done so that person learns their lesson.
Hi folks - this was on the BBC website this morning, I believe it refers to the topic above - www.bbc.co.uk/.../uk-england-hampshire-14613257
According to the above BBC story:-
'Paul Cantwell, Natural England's species enforcement officer, said: "Under the provisions of a general licence issued by Natural England, it is legal to undertake control of rooks for certain purposes.
' "It is also technically legal for people to eat the birds they kill under the licence, but it has never been legal to sell wild birds killed for human consumption, with the exception of the wood pigeon." '
Very interesting! Never knew that!
:-)

Seriously thinking about trying harder!
Always aware of it as far as Wood Pigeons are concerned as it was one way of covering the cost of cartridges when controlling pigeons on farm crops

Birding is for everyone no matter how good or bad we are at it,enjoy it while you can
There is an article about this on the BBC news site now - www.bbc.co.uk/.../magazine-14631856
Apparently the guy supplying the rooks has been arrested. The restaurant owner is lucky the FSA haven't shut him down.
