Hi i work at a supermarket and on the main road at a busy crossroads a collarred dove has setup a nest on top of a traffic light, it has decided to nest half way across the road, so when the chicks hatch they are more than likely going to fall into on coming traffic. Two questions here!
1, If i see any kids or idiots trying to interfere with the bird, eggs, nest, what can i do to stop them?
2, I already no i can not interfere with the nest, but is there anything i can do to prevent the highly likely outcome of the chicks being instant road kill once they try to leave the nest?
Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.Albert Einstein
I had a collared dove nest in the garden two years ago, and I was lucky enough to see the fledgeling's maiden flight. It went from the nesting tree into the next tree along, probably about the same distance apart as if there were a road between them. The landing was a bit wobbly, but the flight was ok, so I would say that the likelihood of yours becoming roadkill is not that great. They don't seem to fly the nest until they're good and ready - in fact, the mum almost had to evict my fledgeling; she was dismantling the nest from beneath it for at least a week before he obliged!
