foxes

I know this has nothing to do with birds, but is fox hunting with the use of hounds still banned??  I have a good reason for asking this question. I thought the ban was still in place, but it seems last weekend in a local area, a fox was killed with hounds. Can someone please let me know.

  • I've never fully understood the new law about fox-hunting and I think there are some pretty grey areas, but I think the hunts are allowed to track the scent with hounds, but the hounds are not allowed to kill the fox, which is supposed to be done humanely. I believe that's the theory, but may be entirely wrong!

A thing of beauty is a joy forever.

  • Hi Rach

thanks for your reply. Im pretty much the same as you, not quite understanding it. I know hunts still go on, because I often see them in my area, but I thought the killing of foxes was still not allowed. A close friend of mine, saw on the weekend, a guy send the hounds after something, but she couldnt quite see what......and afterwards, she noticed the area was full of blood!!

  • I thought it was banned and still do..........

  • It is still banned but as they will say accidents happen :-(

  • Hi Bekky

The Hunting Act 2004 http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2004/37/contents is still in force and prohibits hunting with dogs except where exemptions apply. Stalking an animal or flushing it from cover is exempted in certain circumstances but this can only be carried out with 2 dogs.

The same Act  expressly prohibits Hare Coursing which is very good reason to oppose any moves to have it repealed in my view. The Government of the day has been talking about offering a free vote on this.

Every day a little more irate about bird of prey persecution, and I have a cat - Got a problem with that?

  • Well it makes my blood boil!! It has been made illegal for a reason. It is inhumane, and I will despise seeing them in this area from now on. Who are the people who are supposed to be checking these hunts are kept within the law?? Would it be the police??

  • Yes it would but they've made no secret of the policy that enforcement is given a very low priority.  Accordingly the Hunting Act must be one of the most casually flouted pieces of legislation on the statute books.

I feel so strongly about this, that I am going to think hard about what I can do to at least put them off hunting in this area, I would go up there with a gun if I had one, thats how strongly I feel about it. How dare they do that under peoples noses and not have a care about what others may think, knowing full well they are breaking the law!!

I understand your feelings, but do take care. Many hunt supporter types are not nice people at all.

  • While I can understand your anger.

Would also constitue breaking the law! Reports to your local wildlife officer (every rural police area has one) would be your best course of action. Whilst not a prioroty they cannot ignore formal complaints.
