Shot Swans

I have just watched an article on local TV about nine swans shot with an air rifle on the Somerset levels, one has survived after having surgery they are not sure it's going to make it.

Words fail me,this is a despicable act I hope whoever did this is caught a given a suitable punishment.

  • Many years ago in Kidderminster a female swan was shot and killed with a cross bow bolt as she sat on her nest :-(

It makes you not very proud to be a member of the human race.

    Hi Ray

I hate hearing crimes against wildlife like this

It is so sad and why do people have to hurt creatures like Swans

Yes, the imigrants have killed Swans where I live in Bedford.  One Swan was killed in the middle of broad daylight, and the man was arrested there and then

Here is another link to the same story as the first post shows

I have to say I cannot get my head around this act of cruelty that is going on in this article

We have had a few incidents of Swans deaths in Bedford over the years... including the deaths of 30 Swan deaths from a few years ago.

To me this incident smells of kids, air-guns in the wrong hands, and boredom setting in do they decided to do something really constructive and mistreat Swans instead for a little sport

  • Over the years we have had incidents like this mainly on our local canal including the use of crossbows. It's a pity the culprits rarely seem to get caught.

    Pete

Birding is for everyone no matter how good or bad we are at it,enjoy it while you can

    Hi Seaman

    Another situation that upsets me

I have never heard of Crossbows being used ......only Air-rifles/Guns so far where live here in Bedford

Where on earth do people get Crossbows from?  Is it not illegal to have one except for the purpose it is suposed to be used for - noted as a dangerous weapon like knives are?

Makes me think that 'minors' are the people who are inflicting this behaviour on Swans for fun!

    Regards

Words fail me, and I can't type what I would like to do to these people if they were caught red handed killing swans in this inhumane way.

I remember reading the item about some immigrants killing swans for food last year. I hope that they received the punishment that they deserved as well.

    Best wishes Chris

    Hi Kathy

I don't know if this has been further updated but this is from Wikipedia. Crossbows in the UK:

Under the Crossbows Act 1987, crossbows cannot be bought, hired or sold in England, Wales or Scotland by those under 17, even under adult supervision. The act states that crossbows may be used by persons under 17 years of age only when supervised by a person aged 21 years or over. [4] Similar prohibitions for Northern Ireland are made in the Crossbows (Northern Ireland) Order 1988. Section 5 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 prevents their use for hunting birds. In Scotland, section 50 of the Civic Government (Scotland) Act 1982 [5] makes it illegal to be drunk in a public place in possession of a crossbow.

Section 44 of the Violent Crime Reduction Act 2006, designed to bring crossbows into line with firearms, raised the age limit to 18 in England and Wales, with effect from 1 October 2007[6]. The Scottish Parliament made similar changes in section 62 of the Custodial Sentences and Weapons (Scotland) Act 2007 [7], also with effect from 1 October 2007.

    Best wishes Chris

  • Hi just read the articles and they make me feel sick.

If its kids what are there parents doing. Both my lads wanted guns and were told theybcould have one if they joined a club with me. They didn't bother.

there was a RSPCA programme on last week where they were checking reports of a swan been taken and they visited an address where the residents were immigrants. They admitted their kids had been chasing the bird round a park after they were given it. The birds feathers and beak were in a sack and the bird was in a pot on the cooker.  Nothing was done as the inspector could not say weather it was goose or swan.

  • Repeating my self here but there are some real sick people about thats for sure. If they want to shoot living things, put them in the army, bring back national service, then see how brave they really are !!

They are Nothing but worthless cowards. When you see our brave young troops in Afghanastan fighting for the right of freedom then you see this sort of thing happening at home it makes me sick to the stomach.

    Feed The Birds....not the cats!!!!

    I know....my spelling's crap !!
