Hi, I was driving around my local area, here in rural co Fermanagh
NIreland, when I noticed that almost all the hedges bordering the fields
Have been cut down to about 3 or 4 feet high, totally decimated.
There will hardly be a suitable nesting habitat left if they keep this up.
I think this must be one of these EU directives, where the farmers have
To keep the hedges so many metres wide, in order to claim the single
farm payment.
I don’t understand, a few years ago the EU were encouraging farmers to
Restore hedges, this destruction of the hedges started a few weeks ago,
And I am sure miles of hedges with berries were lost, in the worst, winter for years,
Is this carry on taking place anywhere else in the uk?. and what have the rspb,
to say on such matters?.
How long will it be before a bird or anything else will find shelter
in a hedge like this?
Your right thats pretty bad!
Fingers crossed that it is part of some master plan in an agri-environmental scheme.
Best wishes
Stoat
I'm not bald. I've just got ingrowing hair!
Hi all,
Those photos are definitely drastic but the same is going on here too. They were being really harsh with a boundary hedge that separates a park to the carrigeway that I thought they were making way for something. It is though just to cut them back.

Its down right rape and destruction, what was wrong with giving a hedge a short back and sides,
but oh no, they just had to go the whole hog, it makes me sick.

Agree it is not good and would much prefer to see a better hedge but it is just possible of course that that hedge was unmanagable by the look of the size of the stumps and my hope would be he is going to set a new one but of course no worse than when a hedge gets ripped out for housing and not much fuss made then usually.

Hi Chris S
That picture shows exactly what has been done to the hedge that I was talking about near where I live. I have to say it looks very professional, and I applaud the people who must have worked very hard to do it. It looks like a skilled job.
Best wishes Chris

Have you spoken to landowner to find out what they are doing with this area? Not always easy to do admittedly but sometimes a friendly chat is possible. If not an option them it might be worth making local enquiries or even contacting the Northern Ireland Environment Agency for their take on this.
