I haven't cut my garden hedges back for the last 3 years. I wanted to get them cut earlier in the winter, but haven't been able to.
Is it too late now to cut them now? i.e will I be disturbing new nests, etc?

We have had a similar problem. Hedge cutting should be avoided from March until October and so if you can manage by the end of the month, you should be able to avoid nest disturbance.

I totally agree with Claire. We have big hedges all round our back garden and we get them cut anytime between November and February. They are coming to cut them next week this year.
Just a general reminder that disturbing nesting birds is illegal. There is a law on the RSPB website somewhere. I'll have a look for it unless someone can post one up first.

Many hedges are in need of a trim at this time of year and now that most of the berries have been eaten it is an opportune moment. However, many species of hedge nesting bird might be making an early start so before reaching for the power tools please check the hedge carefully for signs of nest building. The species to look out for that may be nesting in a typical hedge in early spring are thrushes (including blackbirds), dunnocks and robins and in taller hedges or trees magpies, woodpigeons and collared doves.
It might be worth considering a few of the different management options for hedge cutting such as trimming on rotation which allows certain parts of the hedge to grow undisturbed for a couple of seasons. By March many of the other hedge nesting species will also be nesting so between March and August it really is best to down tool and sit back and enjoy!
