Scandal of A Duck Farmer - Seriously Distressing

Having just watched SKY News and an investigation into a Duck Farm I find myself upset and totally disgusted with activities at this farm. How a farm owner can be unaware of such cruelty is beyond belief. The offenders should serve time in my view and the farmer should loose his licence for life.
How these grown men can can themselves human is beyond me.
Here is a link but be warned it is distressing

now I understand the meaning of 'exclusively'

Hi JudiM agree with you completely but would just like to make the point it is a small number of bad humans and not bad duck farmers,I feel sure most people rearing ducks would respect them and treat them well.

You may be right that most people rearing ducks would respect them and treat them well, but in this instance the farmer himself should be prosecuted along with those brutal men. His staff are his responsibility - and should be managed appropriately. The farmer has no excuse whatsoever.

I am disgusted and angry, and the RSPB should be taking all steps necessary to prosecute. They need stringing up. All of them. I'm so glad we don't have a local Waitrose shop.

Sparrow ----Yes I agree with all that but think it would be RSPCA to prosecute in a case of domesticated animals.

  • I haven't clicked on the link as I already know that I will find it distressing.

Unfortunately I know someone who works for this company as it was all he could get being made redundant at 62 after working for the same company for 40+ years (no one wants you at that age). I have to warn him when he talks about his job because I do not want to hear it - and some of what I have heard makes me sick. Whilst I should add that he is not an animal abuser, some of the people he works with have no respect for animals - this is because they have low IQ's and can only get that type of job because it is working for minimum wage and nobody wants to do it (It is disgraceful that these types of people are allowed to work with any living creature) - plus a lot of the workers are foreign and don't even speak English. These ducks on farms are not even allowed to display natural behaviour, such as having access to water to swim in. He says that its such a strong instinct that the ducks are often seen trying to use their water troughs to swim in. It's an awful practise and is one of the many reasons why I am a Vegetarian.

Another thing with these farms means that they often go to work of a morning to find that a fox has killed hundreds of the birds - I question why their security isn't better (no doubt it is to allow for more profits) but they still use snares to catch foxes which I think is downright barbaric.

Does it say the location of the farm?

  • The report says Hall Farm Hingham Norfolk.

Thanks Judi, it's not the one the person I know works at but he says he hates the company and hopes the mud sticks after this story!

  • Shocked. No living beast, animal, bird, human should be treated in any way similar to this.

    Excuse wobbily dyslexic spelling!

  • Our local butcher/farmshop emailed today to say they have stopped all sales of Gressingham ducks while they check the source.  They are now sourcing only from  farms they know.  I wondered what it was about so now I know.  Shocking!!

  • Those cruel lads need a dozen strokes of the lash,

  • I feel really sick having seen the video footage. How dare they? Can I just rush off to the farm and throw the workers away by grabbing on their neck?

Argh don't get me started. Animal cruelty is terrible. Full stop.

'Dip a dee dah, dip a dee ay, we're not seeing any birds to-day...'

  • I actually cant believe this. How incredibly cruel. I cant belive they were actually stamping on them and then grabbing their necks. People like this should be shot. It is for reasons like this that I dont eat meat. If you care about animal welfare, then you would go veggie too! I have seen way too many videos like this, and unfortuntely it seems to be the majority of farms that treat their animals like less than nothing. If you do choose to eat meat, make sure that it is from a good farm that cares about welfare and looks after their animals well.

    Home again, home again.
