Guardian readers may have seen this article yesterday showcasing some of the UK's rarest flora and fauna and the protected sites that are the last bastions for many of these creatures.
Some of the species mentioned occur on our nature reserves where we do all we can to encourage them. Many of you will see the term SSSI used, the stands for Site of Special Scientific Interest and is a form of designation for the protection of wildlife.
If you are interested to find out what SSSI's occur near you and for what reason they have been designated, have a look at Natural Englands 'Nature on the map' this can be quite a handy resource if you are worried about any local developments impacting upon protected sites. For further information on how to save wildlife sites near you have a look at our website here.
