I did some searches on this and found some info that states that it is LEGAL and aproved by the Costa Rican goverment:

Its a debatable argument for and against but apprantly the legal harvest of Olive Ridley sea turtle eggs on Ostional wildlife refuge in Costa Rica is for conservation purposes being that the harvest is monitored and that only a cetain amount of harvesting can be made within a time scale.

This has said to have had a positive effect on the numbers of Olive Ridley sea turtles rather than letting the locals harvest them when they wanted and wherever they wanted.

I still think that our sheer greed as a species is proven by the bags full that are taken.

    Thanks

Well I'll be blowed, well done Craig for finding the answer to our plight!

It never entered my head when I received the email that it would be a conservation exercise, but reading your links that you kindly posted, on paper it does seem to be working, but I do feel really sorry for the poor Turtles, having there nests raided and all the eggs taken away while they are there and still laying.

  • CraigB well discovered, that what we react too is not always what it seems!! Me esp. Thanks.

I still think that it's a shame that from all the eggs collected that would not have hatched, due to over use of the beach, that a % is not nurtured in sand beds so the local children + tourists could marvel, then into tanks for the 1st few days after hatching. This might help the turtle population to increase faster with a wee bit of help. Saw a similar scheme when in Malaysia a long time ago.

This has created an interesting debate, which has changed with knowledge. Must ? more, prior to reacting!!
