Hiya friends , I'm trying to find out if RSPB will allow me to ''hide'' a container of non-hazardous items at one of their open viewing platforms for other ''geocachers'' to find and swap items / log the visit. Yes I know it sounds dodgy, but we're all involved in a hobby that involves treasure hunting by gps receivers and finding the ''treasure'' at locations and logging finds on a website.
It's really good fun, especially for youngsters and gets people out & about to new places.More info is avail at www.geocaching.com,and we have to gain landowners permission to ''hide'' items. We are all mostly respectable guys and have a code as to what is right and wrong to do,and are accountable for the same.
Any help would be appreciated to find if I can create a new geocache legally for everyones enjoyment.
Thanks - Paul.
i would surgest you e mail the H.Q. The Lodge Sandy, but i think you
will geta big N.O. best regards mac
That would be ashame if they dont let them hide there tresure . Its becoming quite a big thing and gets Dads and kids out in the fresh air and having a great day .
All the best with your request

If its no fun Yer no doin it right!
Hi Pablo
I agree that anything that gets families out and enjoying nature is a good thing.
You might find though that the viewing platforms are not the best place to hide these things - some bird watchers may object to the inevitable noise and disruption caused by the group looking for the treasure.
Most RSPB reserves have miles of accessible land away from the birds and this may be a better bet for you.
I agree you should contact Sandy and discuss it. Perhaps a guided tour of the hides may be included in the visit for the kids and their families. Getting them interested in birds would be a great spin off of the occasion.
Just a thought

I did this a couple of weeks ago with my daughter in Parkhurst Forest.
We both had great fun saw a lot of wildlife and does no damage as far as I can see.
Maybe the viewing platforms themselves may not be a good idea (for reasons given in other posts) but there must be plenty of places to hide something.

It's not always easy to hug a hedgehog.
But that doesn't mean you shouldn't.
I would suggest that near the shop/cafe or visitor centre would be better than the viewing platforms for the reasons previously stated. At least the other areas are more used to the inevitable hustle and bustle, and should not disturb the birds or birders.
Good luck with it though.
