Hi everyone,
the results are in for the Big butterfly count and things are looking up for some of our species.
Gatekeeper being one of the biggest surprises! (I personally saw lots this year)

I took part in the Big Butterfly Count. I have seen hundreds of Butterflies in the garden this year. There are still plenty in the garden today. I like to think it is because of all the nectar rich plants I have planted, but it is probably due to the hot summer.
Thanks Craig :)
Interesting results indeed. Nice to see Gatekeeper numbers right up there. I'm surprised to see Common Blue and not Holly Blue in the top ten, it's been a pretty good Holly Blue year and they are much more likely in gardens than Common Blues. Hope they reveal the placings of all the other species in due course.

I think you can still add records today on the Big butterfly count as the survey runs July until the end of August. I spotted a brimstone and red admiral when out for a walk at lunch today so there is still plenty of activity, especially now the sun is out.
This is a great excuse to get out in the garden or wider countryside and enjoy the last of the August sunshine this year!

Anyone who'd like to see Brown Hairstreak, a real beauty and one of our latest-flying butterflies, should go for it now as well. I had fab views of one about this time last year at RSPB Pulborough Brooks :)
