Don't Cut the countryside petition

Hi everyone,

just to maybe inspire at little here, I sent my email to the powers that be regarding potential goverment cost cuts in wildlife conservation.

Heres my piece for you to read:

As humans, biodiversity is needed for a better way of life. We are all part of it and without it we would struggle ourselves.

Every living organism in this world has a place that is important to keep the planet ticking.

Money doesn’t make the world go round but species do.

I really hope to see species in this country survive in a world that is dominated by humans; as we know some species adapt as in the rat, pigeons, magpies and yet because these animals adapt we look at them as pests but for some species that cannot adapt to human development and progress; this is were we need to step in and help but if we cut costs on wildlife projects and stop managing and creating new habitats this can only mean disaster for these animals and plants.

For example the Corncrake is a quintessential summer visitor to British farmland and is now rare and on the red status list of endangered species threatened with extinction in the next 5 years; if we were to stop projects today to keep this bird in the wild.

I remember going to London zoo when I was 10 years old and there was an exhibition on Extinct species and on reading about the Thylacine wolf of Tasmania and how the last remaining animal was seen in a zoo in 1933; after that it became extinct.

Even then I wondered how so much more could have been done to save this wonderful animal; now children will only learn about this species in texts books. I have to say then I was saddened when I continued to read on about other species plight and mostly at the hands of human "progress".

So let’s not have to create exhibitions about British species that have become extinct; just to save money in the short term.

We are the most intelligent animal on this planet and we owe it to other species that can not make these critical decisions.

From the humble Honey bee to birds that evolved 150 million years ago and mammals including us of which we have only graced this earth for 6 million years.

Lets try and keep it that all of our species can go on evolving naturally and that future generations can enjoy the same wildlife that we all have taken so much for granted.

  • Hi Craig,

Very nicely put and touching - I hope somebody influential will read it.

    Andy

    Seriously thinking about trying harder!

  • Thanks Andy. I hope it is read along with the many others who hopefully will send the email.

    cheers

  • Hi Craig, thank you for drawing attention to this. It could be devastating for farmland wildlife if schemes such as Higher Level Stewardship (HLF) which reward farmers for helping wildlife, had their funding cut.

I would encourage you to send our "Don't cut the life from our countryside" email to the Star Chamber of senior ministers. This can be done here

  • Hi Richard,

My email was sent a few days ago but maybe we would need a much broader range of advertising to get this out there to the masses.

As we know not everyone comes onto this website and also if younger people also put thier point of view across; after all its the younger generation who could potentially suffer under these cuts.

    Thanks

    Craig
