Hunting and hare coursing

Most of you will know that I love hares. http://www.rspb.org.uk/community/forums/t/18884.aspx

To try to help their plight, I joined the Hare Preservation Trust.

In the last HPT newsletter, members were urged to write to their local MPs to voice their concerns about the Hunting ban repeal; which I did, and I received a letter back from mine yesterday.... I'm now feeling somewhat deflated, defeated and rather anxious for the future....

If my local MP won't 'carry my voice' to parliament, what ever can be done? My message to him was about being one of the 86% of the public that was against hunting, and would therefore also be against a repeal. If 86% of the public's opinion doesn't make a difference, how can this possible be fought?????

  • Yes unfortunately I do think they will repeal the law, however I still think it helps to make your feelings known and will add my own voice to protect animals from cruel pursuits.

  • I agree Judi with huge regret

Thanks for putting this up Maria. I would have felt slightly despairing if I had received it too.

I feel this is a time when more than ever, those of us against any cruelty to any living creature need to join forces.

I have frequently been dismissed as being "emotional" about this but I have made sure that I'm informed  of both sides of the arguement of the bigger picture this issue is a part of, so that my head and heart are engaged

There is enough evidence available that humans, while frequently well intentioned and hugely creative, are not yet often wise or even civilized.

I find it interesting that the word human comes from the Old French word "humain" and that homo comes from the latin and can be understood as meaning earthly being.

The subject of hunting became a really explosive discussionon on the Springwatch notice board when someone raised it. Watching the aggression expressed by both sides was at times frightening. The initial and central point became lost in each sides need to be right.

Sorry ! Not a cheery post and I'm not sure what the solution is, but I'll keep working to find it and I know there are many others doing the same.

  • Hi Maria

I can understand how you feel deflated and defeated upon receiving this letter, but sadly I don't know how a repeal of the hunting bill could be fought either. :-(

I recently received a letter from my local MP, on a completely different topic, that suggested he had just skimmed through my letter and misquoted something from my local Council, so I know exactly how you feel. :-(

    Best wishes Chris

    Hi Maria

Well done for writing to the parliament about the issue in the first place.

The letter you have in response to yours is tripping around the points you are getting across in the first place, Maria and that is to me pussy footing around the issue in the first place.  There are too many old laws stuck in books. from many years ago and they are never updated to go with todays views on hunting issues.

I can understand how you are feeling as you are doing what you feel in right and that is to completely outlaw hare-coursing and see it as a serious issue as with foxhunting (though I know that there is discussions going on in parliament now about overturning to law and making it legal once more)  Goodness knows why as there are a small miniority of the 'them' supporters, and lot of 'us' people around who disapprove of the whole idea in the first place.

On another one of my Forums, it has raised an outcry of how members feel and there is never any stoppage of the anger that people feel towards any 'cruel' sport that is considered illegal, when it comes to hunting/tormenting wild animals for the pure fun of it.  Members get very outspoken about it and they do not leave any stone unturned by these particular type of issues at all.

A famous cook on TV was caught Hare Coursing (from my memory a few years ago) and since i have heard of her other hobby (not cooking on TV) I have gone completely off her as a person and a celebrity all together.  I have no respect left or time left for her as a person.  I am sure this other 'unsavoury' side of her has affected her TV career.

I think many more people should write in with a signed petition the issue will be taken a lot more seriously indeed.

    Regards

    Kathy and Dave

  • Just keep banging against the brick wall until it collapses is all we can do, for all cruelty to animals.

  • So sorry you received such a negative reply from your mp.

Are they going to  have a referendum regarding hunting?  If so, surely the huge majority of people who are opposed to it will win out.

I live in the Highlands, which is beautiful, but I do get very upset at the amount of hunting and shooting that goes on.

On a lighter not, we have a rescue greyhound, who lives quite happily with the two resident rabbits we have living in the garden, plus their 3 young ones!

  • If you go to www.backtheban.com  you can sign a petition to keep the ban on hunting with dogs.

  • Keep fighting MarJus, we're all with you.

    Cheers, Linda.

  • No surprise there with this new regime.  The foetid act of hunting with dogs belongs with witch burning....

Every day a little more irate about bird of prey persecution, and I have a cat - Got a problem with that?

  • Thanks everyone for your encouragement and support! With Rodney Hale's help (founder and chairman of the HPT) I'm putting together a reply for Mr Owen Patterson which will hopefully push a bit harder!

Thanks for the link too Cottagegardener! Shall definitely sign!
