I have discovered nesting magpies in a large tree which I plan on removing from the garden. As I understand it Magpie chicks are laid in April and require 4 weeks before fledging and a further 4 weeks being fed by their parents meaning they would be gone after 2 months making it safe for me to remove the tree from July. Please advise if this is correct so I can remove the tree legally.

That sounds about right . But to be on the safe side Do you think you could wait untill the end of September start of October before taking down the tree?

7/8 weeks would normally be about right but i think you will know when they are finished.Like Al, says the longer the better but if you have too, they should definitely be all done by the end of July.:o)

That would be the best way. There is always a chance that the Magpies will try for another clutch of eggs if they feel the need too - survival of the species as they flourish once more.
So I think the best thing is to hang fire with the removal of the tree for the time being until a later date.

For the Magpies to try for another clutch would mean a failed nest.Hopefully, that will not be the case.
I don't know if it is because of some legislation or just a voluntary estate policy, but my local foresters do not do any clearance work [pruning, ride clearing etc.] until July 15th each year. [St Swithin's Day].
