Please re-sign Badger Cull Petition - wording wrong

Hi All

Sorry to have to ask you all again to sign the petition to stop the proposed Badger cull but I have received this e.mail from   pembrokeshireagainstthecull.org.uk

A new online petition has been opened on the Welsh Assembly Government's website by Save The Badger and Badger Trust member Pat Underwood. Pat had previously handed in a petition with a large number of signatures but was told by the Clerk of the Petitions Committee that the 'wording was wrong'. She has now been advised by her AM, Christine Chapman, - also Chair of the Petitions Committee - and her newly worded petition accepted. CLICK HERE to go to the petition ' Review the badger cull pilot scheme in North Pembrokeshire'. You will need to register your details, but we encourage you to do this - we must let them know just how much opposition there is within Wales. And please let as many other people know about this as you can. The closing date for signing the petition is 26th April.

If the link does not work try:    http://www.assemblywales.org/gethome/e-petitions/eform-sign-petition.htm

Thanks everyone.  I just cannot bare to think of these beautiful wild creatures being slaughtered.

    Hello again Chez,

I've banged the site in favourites for now, but I'll sign it for sure later on. One query:

In the outline of the petition, the last line of paragraph 1 refers to "biodiversity". Should this not read "biosecurity"? Or am I just being a sad old pedant?

  • Hi Mickycoop

I see what you mean and I think you are right, but I have written to all the MP's and AM's and they all go on about biodiversity ie. improved TB testing, cattle movement monitoring and I am fed up with 'holistic approach' cropping up as an excuse in every letter.

The Randonised Badger Culling Trial in 1997 provided evidence that it is the cattle who are giving the badgers TB and not the other way round.  They tested for TB in road kill badgers and found only 15% carried the infection.   In the trial they monitored, 11,000 badgers were killed and only 16.6% were found to be diseased.  It was proposed that only severely lesioned badgers can be infectious but the number of highy lesioned badgers was less than 1.7%    It cost £50 million pounds for the trial and proved culling was ineffective.

I get so mad - sorry to get on my soap box!!

No problem Chez, I'm sick and tired of OUR countryside and natural heritage being abused by the greedy as well! But the MPs who quote this definition of "biodiversity" seem not to have any understanding of the word.

All the best to you and your campaigning.

    Mick

  • Hi Chez please do not think I am pro a Badger cull but if you study closely the restrictions on farmers to prevent T B you will find it is in theory impossible to blame the cattle. Also some herds that have been T B free for years suddenly have a breakdown even though it is what is called a self contained herd which means they have not bought any animals in.For sure some wild animal must be infecting cattle.
