Now that the UK Osprey season is about to kick off, I'm transferring over from the LG Forums (link set at hatch page) this beautiful Great Horned Owl couple, who are nurturing a single owlet. I think that the female is the same one whom I followed here (in a different tree, as Hurricane Matthew intervened) several years ago - she has a squint (at the very least) in her left eye.
The owlet is coming along great, here was its tea yesterday, when it seemed to manage the whole of a rat-tail but we never quite saw the tip go down:
IMAGICAT
Morning Scylla, It's been suggested (on Twitter) that it could have been a barred owl. I hope dad is seen to confirm it wasn't him (if the ID is wrong).
It's been confirmed that it was indeed a barred owl.
I don't think that Owlet's tasted much of the Barred Owl - it was such a tough customer for Mama to deal with:
Last evening - Mama with a rat, that's better!
On Monday she was still digging into the Barred Owl, I didn't see Owlet eat any.
Close-up:
15 March
The day started well with an Owlet-sized rat (not shown) but continued with disturbances and a couple of hits by a Red-tailed Hawk!
.
I have to stop covering this nest now - if you want to follow it, here's April Lynn's YT Channel - she does a great job.
The GH Owlet has grown so much! This pic, with Mama, from just over an hour ago
It's sheer coincidence that I just popped over and grabbed an update snap from rollback (it's nightcam there at the mo):
